Give the gift of health this season

It is that time of year when we get to practice the art of giving
and receiving - which can often include alot of pondering as we struggle
to select gifts that are personally touching and will be truly
appreciated!!

May we suggest that a gift of one or more reflexology sessions would
be a delightful, thoughtful, caring gift. It can be used for the
pampering pleasure of pure relaxation, or, ease of stress or pain, or,
to address some health issues. You may even consider a gift for
yourself!

Parkinson's Disease and Reflexology

October 12th, 2011 we were invited to do a  reflexology presentation with the local support group coping with the daily concerns of Parkinson's disease.

As in all our presentations, our objectives were to inform and educate others concerning the many health benefits of reflexology. Our talk was geared to how Reflexology might alleviate some of the many symptoms Parkinson's suffers endure.  Reflexology's four main benefits include relaxation, reduction of stress, increase of circulation, and balancing of all body systems.  Some of the many symptoms of Parkinson's that reflexology may improve include constipation, depression and anxiety, posture, and sleep.
We provided new insight for many concerning this natural healing therapy with several Parkinson's sufferers signing up for a series of reflexology treatments.

Brighton Ontario's Applefest Weekend included Reflexology

Wellness Tent was well attended at Brighton’s 37th annual Applefest

Brighton was represented by several local complementary health practitioners for the inaugural Wellness Tent.  It was actually held at Darcy Arthur’s Yoga studio, with a sign up tent outside.  Offered were massage, reflexology, reiki, holistic nutrition, and meditation.  Participants were treated to three fifteen minute treatments for ten dollars.  What a great way for people to broaden their complementary health experience!

Wilson & Reynolds, like the rest, were busy the majority of the day.  It was nice to have the opportunity to further educate the public about the benefits of regular reflexology treatments.  The wheels are already turning to expand for next year!  Thanks to all those who participated!

Aboriginal Diabetes Wellness Initiative

Honoured to offer our services at Soadi

What a moving experience Julie and I had at the Soadi Diabetes Wellness Event held on Sept. 23, in our nation’s capital.  We were two, of five reflexologists who participated along with chiropodists and foot care nurses, to provide diabetes care and education to the aboriginal community. The event was sponsored by, the Southern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative.

The prevalence of diabetes is 3 to 5 times higher in the Aboriginal Community than in the non-aboriginal community.  Soadi puts on foot care clinics several times a year in each of the six Soadi regions.  Thanks Soadi for a memorable day!

Water retention and reflexology

Water Retention
Reflexology aims to treat the imbalances of each individual and to alleviate and improve symptoms. It does not however claim to prescribe, diagnose or cure a specific medical problem. It is a well-established complementary therapy but, in common with most complementary therapies, there has only been limited research aimed at validating it. Reflexology should never be used in place of seeking medical advice.

What evidence is there to validate Reflexology?

Many of the research projects in reflexology are very small studies. This is due in part to lack of evidence to allow the studies to be set up in the first place and in part due to the lack of funding opportunities. However, there is a suggestion that reflexology may have an effect from the following studies:

To follow.....

Disorders of the urinary system range in severity from easy-to-treat to life-threatening which can be caused by aging, illness, or injury. Water retention can be one of the presenting symptoms of a urinary disorder.

Urinary System

The Urinary System filters the blood and removes waste chemicals from the body. The kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra make up the urinary system.

There is, as yet, no unified theory as to how Reflexology works but some Reflexologists believe that their effects may involve some or all of following on the urinary system

• It is medically accepted that good kidney function promotes a healthy cardiovascular function, including influencing blood pressure. Though not medically proven, it is common to find that those suffering from hypertension have sensitive kidney reflexes. The bladder is directly related to the stress response and can be affected by emotions such as fear and anxiety.
• Reflexologists believe that Reflexology may breakdown deposits in the feet and that the stimulation of Reflexology may decongest energy pathways (possibly via Meridians believed to exist in the body by practitioners of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)). This process, Reflexologists believe, may allow the urinary system to work optimally (as it may do for all body systems).

What is Water Retention?

Oedema is fluid retention. It occurs when there is too much fluid (mainly water) in the body's tissues, causing swelling to occur in the affected area. The swelling is usually related to the venous (veins) system or the lymphatic system (tubes that carry lymph, a fluid that helps fight infection and clear fluid).

Oedema can affect:

the hands, arms, feet, ankles and legs (swelling is most common in these areas),
the brain (known as cerebral oedema), and
the eyes (known as macular oedema).

Normally, the amount of water in the body is determined by the difference between fluid that is taken in and fluid that is taken out (discharged). Fluid is taken into the body by eating and drinking, and by water produced by bodily processes. It is discharged from the body in the form of urine, faeces, sweat and non-visible perspiration, for example, when breathing out.

Factors such as the surrounding air temperature and strenuous exercise can affect the amount of water that is taken in and out of the body.

In people with oedema, the excess fluid can be caused by a number of factors. This is because oedema is not a condition itself, but is often a symptom of an underlying condition. For example, it can be a sign of kidney disease or lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a type of chronic swelling that occurs when the lymph fluid doesn't fully drain away from the tissues.

Oedema can also sometimes be caused by lifestyle factors, such as pregnancy, or a high dietary salt intake.

reflexology and headaches

Treating a Headache

The area of the head is represented on the foot by the big toe; the other toes also represent the head and the sinuses and teeth as well. The crease between the base of the toes and the foot represents the neck, and the area of the foot immediately below the little toe represents the shoulder.

You can treat a headache yourself by finger or thumb walking over each of the toes and up the backs and down the fronts of the toes and thumb walking along the crease between the toes and the foot.

Reflexology and aging

We all get older, and as we age our bodies don’t work as efficiently in many aspects of life. Reflexology can help combat the aging process and keep us feeling younger longer.
After age 30, the body’s metabolism and production of digestive enzymes slow down. The combination of these two things can lead to poor digestion and numerous digestive ailments. Foot reflexology improves the blood flow to the intestines stimulating better digestion. Patients suffering constipation problems who received foot reflexology showed a quicker bowel transit time. However, even those who weren’t suffering from constipation responded to the foot reflexology and saw more productive bowel movements.
Moreover, foot reflexology was found to be more effective than prescribed drugs when treating painful or imperfect digestion. Again it increases blood flow to the area, and this increased flow helps relieve stress. This reduction in stress allows for less wear and tear which ultimately leads to more healing.
In addition to digestive issues as we get older, there is a rapid increase of older individuals’ doing kidney dialysis to combat kidney failure. As it does for the intestines, foot reflexology increases blood flow to the kidneys. This stimulates the kidneys to work more effectively.
High blood pressure seems to be a staple of getting older. Reflexology helps the mechanism of the heart which regulates blood pressure. When reflexology was used, the heart was better able to maintain lower blood pressure.
Lastly, the aches, pains and stiffness that come with aging don’t have to be a part of everyday. When stimulating reflex points, the increased blood flow helps reduce the wear and tear, resulting in less stiffness and pain. Those suffering from arthritis who received reflexology found decreased pain and stiffness and were able to do things they hadn’t done in years.

We are frequently asked about foot pain

Here are a list of four conditions that cause foot pain. reflexology can help ease discomfort in most cases.

Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is a conditions that describes generalized pain at the bottom or 'balls' of the feet, or simply called pain in the forefoot. As we walk, our forefoot joints flex, twist and turn. Three specific and common conditions associated with metatarsalgia - Morton's Syndrome/Neuroma, Joint Head Pain and Interdigital Neuroma are described below.
Morton's Syndrome
These conditions occur when the first tow is shorter relative to the second toe. This leads to excess pressure being placed on the ball of the second toe and/or pinching of a nerve between the 3rd and 4th toes. Effects are tender joint of the second toe, sharp shooting pain in the area of the toes, possible numbness or pins and needles sensation in the toes and excess pressure on the second toe causing callous formation.
Metatarsal Joint Pain
Any or a combination of the following can contribute to joint pain in the ball of the foot: flat feet, high arched feet, toe deformities, osteoporosis and arthritis and direct trauma to the joints. Effects are increased pressure causing callousing under the ball of the foot, joint tenderness or stiffness, change in walking pattern to avoid pain, increased potential for stress fractures, site of ulceration for diabetics, sensation similar to walking on a pebble when going barefoot.
Interdigital Neuroma
This condition can be described as pinching of a nerve between the toes from pointy toed shoes, high heeled shoes, flat feet, high arched feet or old worn out shoes. Effects are pain in the toe area that feels like an electric shock, numbness, pins and needles and tendency to remove shoes whenever possible for relief.

Stress and Reflexology

Stress is a silent killer.  Research has shown that high stress levels not only increase negative hormone levels, the ones responsible for inhibiting sickness and disease, but it also suppresses the immune system. More than ever before in our history, we are in need of a way to unwind, and care for ourselves in an effective manner.
The vast majority of people today are on the go almost constantly. This is only one of the reasons that people are looking for an effective way to escape the stress of daily life.

Far Eastern cultures have been using alternative treatments for thousands of years and still do so today. Even the most technically advanced countries such as China and Japan, appreciate the effectiveness and simplicity of natural medicine. So why not try a form of therapy that is effective, yet has no side affects? However, with so many products on the market begging for a sale, where do you begin? Maybe it is time to introduce you to reflexology.
